Ten key stats from Sergio Busquets' time with FC Barcelona

The midfielder made his debut in 2008 and eight years later is third captain and one of the most important members of the team both and off the pitch

Sergio Busquets and FC Barcelona reached an agreement on Friday to extend the player’s contract, which was due to end in 2019, until 2021, with the option to extend it through to 2023. The midfielder has developed to become a central element of the Barça game-plan and this is a fitting moment to take a look back at ten key points from his career so far:

384 official appearances. Made his debut on 13 September 2008 at the Camp Nou under Pep Guardiola in a 1-1 draw with Racing Santander. That season, the team went on to win the double.

Those 384 games have been in six different competitions, broken down as follows: 247 in La Liga, 44 in the Copa del Rey, 76 in the Champions League, 9 in the Spanish Super Cup, 3 in the European Super Cup and 2 in the Club World Cup.

Third captain. His role in the team has grown as each season has gone by. After the departures of Valdés and Puyol, Sergio was promoted to fourth captain in the 2013/14 season, and moved up to third when Xavi Hernández left last summer.

12 goals for the first team. His duty has never really been to score goals, but he has netted a few in his time for the team. In fact, this season just ended is the only one in which he failed to find the target once.

23 titles. Sergio’s time at FC Barcelona has coincided with the club’s most successful period ever, and he has winners medals from 3 Champions Leagues, 6 Ligas, 4 Copa del Rey, 3 European Super Cups, 4 Spanish Super Cups and 3 Club World Cups.

Becomes number five. On 1 August 2014, while the team was on a preseason camp at St George's Park in Birmingham, it was announced that Busquets would be inheriting Carles Puyol’s number five shirt. Before that he had worn 28 and 16.

This season he played 53 games for Barça, the most he has ever played in a single campaign

Sergio Busquets has started in every one of the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals that Barça have contested between 2009 and 2016.

He made his 350th appearance for Barça this season in the 6-1 defeat of AS Roma at the Camp Nou.

He is also one of the stars of the Spanish national side, with which he has won one World Cup (2010) and one European Championship (2012).
