La Cartuja is hosting the first ever Clásico in Seville this Saturday, and it's the Copa del Rey Final no less. It thus becomes the 17th different ground for a competitive game between Barça and Real Madrid and the 25th in total.
Ten cup venues
There have been ten different grounds used for Clásicos in the cup, including the first ever in 1902, at the Madrid Hippordome is the fledgling Copa Coronación right back in the early days of Spanish football. The 1916 semi-finals were played home and away at the old Calle Muntaner stadium in Barcelona and the Estadio O’Donnell in Madrid.
Barça later played cup games at Les Corts and Spotify Camp Nou, while Madrid's later homes were Chamartín and the Santiago Bernabéu. There were also neutral venues in Mestalla, Valencia for four different finals (1936, 1990, 2011 and 2014), the Vicente Calderón in 1974 and the Romareda, Zaragoza, in 1983.
Liga exceptions
There are a few cases where league games were not played at the usual venues. From 1946 to 1947, Real Madrid played at the old Metropolitano while work was being done on Chamartín, and in 2021 one game was played in their training ground, the Alfredo di Stéfano, in times of the pandemic. And of course, Barça are now playing at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys as redevelopment work is done on their new stadium.
Three in Saudi
Saudi Arabia has hosted the Spanish Super Cup in recent years, and the two rivals have played at three different venues in the country. The King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh hosted in 2022 and 2023, and Al-Awwal Park in the same city did so in 2024, while the 5-2 last January was played at the King Abdullah in Jeddah.
Eight friendly venues
As for non-competitive encounters, from 1913 to 1921 the teams played nine games at Calle Industria, in 1922 they inaugurated the Delicias stadium in Zaragoza, and also played twice at the legendary Carranza Trophy in Cádiz at the old Ramón de Carranza (now Nuevo Mirandilla) in 1959 and 1968.
The other five friendlies were played abroad. The Hard Rock in Miami, Metlife in New Jersey, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and AT&T Stadium in Dallas have all hosted games on US Tours, while the other dates back somewhat further, the first ever Clásico outside of Spain in 1982 at the Farid Richa in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
