The round of 16 came to a close this Wednesday, which means FC Barcelona now know which teams they might face in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Here’s an overview of the seven teams the Blaugrana might be paired up against:
Paris Saint Germain: It would be the third match between PSG and Barça in Europe. The previous two encounters were spectacular. In the first, the French team defeated the Catalans in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 1995. Two season’s later, the two teams faced off in the final of the Cup Winners Cup in Rotterdam, Barça came away with the title thanks to a goal from Ronaldo (1-0).
Juventus: The two teams have featured against each other four times, in three different competitions: European Cup / Champions League, Cup Winners Cup and Fairs Cup. The matches were all fantastic to watch and the head-to-head record is even. In the Champions League, Barça defeated Juventus in the quarter-finals in 1986 thanks to goals from Julio Alberto and Archibald. Years later, however, Juve defeated Barça at the Camp Nou in overtime thanks to a goal from Zalayeta.
Real Madrid: In the Champions League Barça and Madrid have faced off four times, with two victories apiece. The most recent was in the semi-finals of the 2010/11 season, when Barça defeated Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu by 0-2 and later secured passage to the Wembley final with a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Barça went on to win the title.
Borussia Dortmund: The Germans have only featured against FC Barcelona in the European Super Cup (1997), when the tournament was still decided by two matches. Dortmund had won the Champions League the season prior, while Barça had claimed the Cup Winners Cup. FC Barcelona won the competition thanks to a 2-0 at the Camp Nou and 1-1 in Germany.
Galatasaray: Games between the Turks and the Catalans were fairly common between 1993 and 2003. During this time Galatasaray and FC Barcelona faced off in four group stages of the Champions League. The Blaugrana came out on top as they always managed to get to the knock out stages. Barça’s record against Galatasaray stands at 5 victories, 2 draws and 1 defeat.
Bayern Munich: The first official match between Barça and Bayern was played in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1996. The Germans, who won 1-2 at the Camp Nou, tipped Barça for a spot in the final. Bayern also went on to defeat Barça in the group stages of the Champions League in the 1998/1999 season. 10 years later saw Barça pick up its first victory over the German side: Pep Guardiola, on the bench, led his team to a 4-0 win over Bayern in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Barça went on to win the treble that season.
Málaga: FC Barcelona have never faced Málaga in a European competition. This season is Málaga’s first in the Champions League, and they’ve already made history by making it to the quarter-finals.
