Known as “The Maradona of the Carpathians”, Hagi is considered the best Romanian footballer of all time. He had an amazing left foot, especially from set pieces. He was a creative attacking midfielder, scored loads of goals and was a born leader. At Barça, he scored a goal at Balaídos direct from the restart after Celta, on 11 December 1994. Arrived at Barcelona from Brescia in Italy in the summer of 1993. After two years at Barça he left for Turkish outfit Galatasaray.

The departure of Michael Laudrup at the end of the 1993-94 season meant a new foreigner could be added to the squad. That place went to a top quality all-round midfielder, who made his debut on 27 August 1994in the Spanish Super Cup against Zaragoza in the first leg at la Romareda, which Barça won 2-0. Although the Aragonese side won the return leg 5-4 at the Camp Nou, Barcelona hung on for the title. After two seasons at the club, the last two with Johan Cruyff on the bench, he signed for Galatasaray in the Turkish league, where he played for five years and won one UEFA Cup among other honours. The 2000-01 season was his last as a professional player.
